Newspaper Coverage of the John W. Cockrell Eviction

San Francisco Call, November 9, 1883, Friday morning, p. 1:

  The McAuliffe Murder.
HANFORD, Nov. 8. -- Several friends of the murdered man Edward H. McAuliffe arrived from San Francisco on last night's train, and left on the train before daylight this morning with the remains of the unfortunate man. Among these were his father, E. McAuliffe, his brother, J. J McAuliffe, and the latter's partner, Colonel J. Monaghan. J. H. Riley accompanied the body with them to the city. He and Colonel Monaghan said they proposed to return to Hanford. It was stated that a reward of $2,000 is offered for the discovery of McAuliffe's murderer.
J. H. Riley, in his testimony at the Coroner's inquest, stated that last Sunday a peculiar looking man like a Spaniard came to the place and made some inquires that aroused Riley's suspicion. He wished to enter the ranch shanty of W. Cockrell, where Riley was topping, but Riley dissuaded him by telling him there was a sick man there, and the doctor's instructions were that he should not be disturbed. The man soon left. Riley seemed to think that this man killed McAuliffe This remarkable homicide has been the general topic of conversation and discussion to-day.
