William Aaron Cockrill Papers

CHILDREN OF BRUCE COCKRILL AND MARTHA BELLINGHAM

Larkin Davenport Cockrill was born in Spartenburg, So. Car. Jan. 4, 1800. He married Didamia Stamps in Kentucky, date not known. They moved from Kentucky to Missouri and Bruce Travis Cockrill, the youngest child was born in a village named Red Dirt, Bates Co., Missouri on Jan. 4th 1852. In 1853 the family crossed the plains in a covered wagon, settling in Bloomfield, Sonoma Co., Calif., where Larken Davenport Cockrill built the first house in what afterward became the town of Bloomfield. There was a family by the name of Woodson located in the next valley west some three miles, who were shortly ahead of the Cockrill family in locating in that locality.
Bruce Travis Cockrill, on June 26th, 1877, in San Rafael, Marin Co., Calif., married Martha Diantha Bellingham. She was born in or near Winchester, Ontario, Canada, on the 16th day of Jan., 1858. Her father was Aaron Bellingham, born in Londonderry, Derry Co., Ireland on the 31st day of October, 1831. His family migrated to Canada when he was seven years of age and he came to California in 1857. His wife, the mother of Martha Diantha Cockrill, was born Jan. 4th, 1822, in Matilda Township, County of Dundee, Province of Ontario, Canada. Aaron Bellingham died May 28, 1899 and his wife, who was Clemmenza Fleming, nee Redmond, a widow when he married her, died in Petaluma, Calif., April 30, 1894. The Bellingham family is of English blood, so far as we have any record. We have the family tree back to the time of Richard the Lionhearted. The record shows some of the ancestors to have fought at Battle of the Boyne and several of them have been knighted and Baroneted and after migrating to Ireland the family established a Castle, that being Castle Bellingham and [I will] probably never will see it. The Bellingham family is also known on the Pacific Coast, the City of Bellingham. A large lumber producing city and port in the State of Washington is named after a Bellingham, a cousin of Martha Diantha Bellingham Cockrill. Larken Davenport Cockrill became a Judge after settling in Bloomfield and held that office until his death in 1886. At the time of his death, his son, Bruce Travis Cockrill was appointed Judge of that township and held the office for some 20 years or more. He became a Physician and Surgeon in middle life and was considered a very successful medico, having a large following in Western Marin and Sonoma Counties up to the time of his death Dec. 28th, 1923, in Santa Rosa, Calif.
