Dear
Friends of Spring Hill Cemetery,
Yesterday was a beautiful day at Spring Hill; cool with blue skies. The
cemetery was so very green with everything growing due to abundant spring
rains. Unfortunately, the grasses and weeds happily grew all over our
paths, all but obscuring them. 5 volunteers came together with 4 of Sonoma
County's youth core to tackle the unchecked growth. Regional Parks kindly
provided us with the usual tool truck, dump truck, and snacks.
The first picture shows what we found on arrival. This should be our
widest path, with redwood logs marking the trail. The logs were lost in
the undergrowth, and grasses and weeds high on all sides. The second
picture shows one of the youth crew at work, putting order back in the
path. They also used weed whackers to discourage the overabundant growth.
I give the youth core our deep thanks!
While the youth crew was taming the paths and weed eating the high grasses,
the rest of us focused on clearing downed limbs from the forest floor, and
raking headstone areas free of leaves and debris; pictures 4,5, and 6. We
had a bit of excitement when Jim discovered the chink of stone in the
undergrowth (picture 3). He and Charlie diligently probed and dug it up,
only to find a rock pile. Next time I am sure it will be one of our lost
headstones.
Lastly is a picture of the group (and, no, Patsy did not push me....).
Our next workday will be either June 27 or August 1st. I will check with
Regional Parks to see which date works best, and will be getting back to
you with what is decided. Please come and join us if you can!
Best Regards,
Sue
