Spring Hill Cemetery Work Days

Dear Friends of Spring Hill Cemetery,

The sun was out for our labors today at Spring Hill. It was the hottest work session that I can remember, although our numerous trees offered welcome shade. Regional Parks provided the indispensable tool trailer, dump truck, and water. Nine sturdy volunteers gathered at the cemetery (last attachment), including two "first timers," Russel and Allyn Burke (Titus descendants). Although they have been members of the "Friends" for some years, this was the first time they were able to make it out for a work session. It was a delight to have them join in.

Conditions at the cemetery are extremely dry for this time of year. Dry leaves and eucalyptus fronds blanketed the cemetery floor. Our focus for today was to clear the paths and haul away the downed branches that littered the ground (attachments 2, 3, and 4).

During a water break, we gathered around the Spring Hill sign to discuss installing an informational sign. Jeremy Nichols recently obtained approval from Regional Parks to add an informational sign to the back of the current Spring Hill sign (attachment 1 shows the existing sign). The "Friends of Spring Hill" have long wanted to install an informational kiosk at the cemetery to provide visitors a cemetery map and list of burials. Regional Parks felt a kiosk might be objectionable to the neighbors, and bring more visibility to the cemetery. Jeremy has negotiated the idea of placing informational material on the back of the current sign. Jeremy plans to draw up a prototype and bring it to the next Spring Hill workday for discussion (August 2). The sign will include the cemetery map, list of burials, and provide contact information directing those wanting more information to the Western Sonoma County Historical Society or to the Spring Hill Website. Once the prototype is accepted, Jeremy plans to go to TAP plastics and devise a hinged housing for the sign that will allow it to be weather-tight, while still providing access for updates. Many thanks to Jeremy for following through with this.

Our next workday is scheduled for Friday, August 2nd. Please mark your calendars and come and join us if you can!

Best Regards,

Sue
