Ledger of My Travels From Missouri to California

September 1853

  Sep. 1st. We traveled on, maid a short drive. I don't know what river as for I was sick. I thought that I would die but the most of the train would have rejoiced at my death.  
  Sept. 2nd. We traveled on maid a hard drive; it was hard on me for it was so rough it nearly killed me. We camped today in the valley ten miles below the Mormon Station.  
  Sept. 3rd. We traveled on our road went about eight miles, passed a tavern sum of the girles stopped to get their dinner after super we went back to the tavern to a party; they all danced until twelve o'clock; with my influence I got the girls to start; their was several very drunk; sum of the girls walked some road, myself and R.M.G. and T.G. walked ourselves, camped on the river at the mountain.  
  Sept. 4th. We traveled on our road sum eight miles passed the Mormon Station, sold several head of cattle passed several hot springes and several mountain streams. Camped on one near the mountains. The pretiest country that I ever saw in all my life. It is equal to any country that I ever saw in my life. It is about foar miles above the Mormon Station.  
  Sept. 5th. We started traded one of our wagons for sum cattle then traveled about six miles. Camped on a mountain stream in the valley. It is a beautiful place.  
  Sept. 6th. We traveled on our road. We passed a splendid water saw mill, tavern and Blacksmith Shop dist at the mouth of an awful canion their we nooned, then took the canion. Of all the roads that I ever saw in all my life it is the roughest road that I ever saw in my life rockes from six inches to foar feet to run over with the wagons. We was bothered on other trains they were in ahead of us sows that we had to stop our wagones got out about dark, then we went out about five miles in Hope Valley, there we camped. It was about eight o'clock.  
  Sept. 7th. We traveled on our road, maid a short drive to get an early start over the mountains we camped by a lake at the foot of the seranivada Mountains.  
  Sept. 8th. We started up the mountains, we was bothered by sum other trains that got in ahead of us. We got over the first spur very easy about six miles from the foot of camp. We camped near the road, drove our cattle about too miles up on the mountains to grass.  
  Sept. 9th. We traveled on our road over the last spir of the mountains crossed the line in California about too o'clock went about six miles from the summit then wee camped. Drove our cattle about too miles to grass. To of the bois went ahead after a colt, met us but got no colt. The bois has not got back.  
  Sept. 10th. We traveled on our road maid a short drive, camped at the Tradgedy springes. We drove our cattle to a large lake about foar miles to grass their was several of us staid with the cattle till morning the balance of them had a dance; they had a fine time.  
  Sept. 11th. The train started on their road, they traveled on, came to the Forks of the road. Went the Volcano road. I went back after a cow. Found her on the summit. Started back got to the Tragida springes staid their all knight tied up the cow, got hay to feed the cow and mule and staid all knight, it cost me jist five dollars.  
  Sept. 12th. I started on my road went to the Leak Springs thought that they went that road. I found out that they was were on the other road. Left the cow went and overtook the train got one of the bois to gow after the cow. We went to the Springes there staid all knight the next morning my bill was sum, it was knign dollars and thirty cts to bee paid at Sacramento.  
  Sept. 13th. We started on our road to overtake the train. We overtook the train, found a stear, brought him and a cow in, found the train at Hartman's Ranch. We road about forty miles today, the train camped about eleven o'clock yesterday.  
  Sept. 14th. We laid up and our stock was tired. We have fine grass and water. Sum of our stock is lost, there is sum of the boys hunting stock today sum gone back, sum gone ahead. We are in five miles of Volcano City.  
  Sept. 15th. We started on our road, started about twelve o'clock the bois was hunting stock. We had to wait till they came in. Six of our bois went off this morning to the mines to make their fortune. We passed thrue Volcano City lait in evening, passed thrue sumo and bought some provisions. We camped in Grass Valley about too miles from the town. They had a party sum of the bois and girls went back to the party. One of our wagons stopped for sicknefs R.M.G. was taken sick very sudden and her child has been very sick for several daiys.  
  Sept. 16th. We traveled on our road went about eight miles stopped and let our cattle graze about too hours came on in six miles of Yone valley and town camped later on account of water.  
  Sept. 17th. We traveled on our road passed thrue a town it was a beautiful plase passed several very fine farmes, came to the ______ valley. Two f the bois went up the creak and got a lot of watermellons. We stopped at a Tavern till they came up then went on camped on a slue near a stage stand, our water was scarce and bad, to bois went to a watermelon patch, got plenty. Then there was three of us went and got a vine lot of melons, sum of the train was mat at us for stealing them, because we did not give them some.  
  Sept. 18th. We traveled on our road, we got in five miles of Sacramento, two of us went back after some cattle, we did not see them we overtook the train very late, they was eating supper. They had a tall quarl today. We went on about five miles after knight camped in a half mile of the American River in five miles of the city.  
  Sept. 19th. We traveled on our road went to the city, they left a calf. I staid back with the calf came up in the cty as the wagons had got across, they took the cattle over drove about three hundred yards from the warf. Then we camped for the knight. Sum of the bois went over to the city to the auction. Came back after knight in a skift.  
  Sept. 20 we still staid here. We laid up to rest the cattle. Wm. Hagan's & Anderson pardner came to meet him today, their was all the bois went oaver to the city to see the wais and manners and fashions of the town. Sum of the girls went oaver to the theatre with some strangers alone with them.  
  Sept. 21 we started on our road we had to go around the tully, it is about thirty five miles out of our way. We passed several ranches on the river. We camped on the river bank about fourteen miles from the city. The bois went back to hunt stock they have not got back yet.  
  Sept. 22nd. We traveled on our road, passed several very pretty places passed Freemont in the afternoon. Camped near a large pon in foar miles of Freemont.  
  Sept. 23rd. We traveled on our road passed the tuly today passed several farmes and watermelon patches. The teemsters and women loaded the wagons with melons but wee driving the cattle got non of them a toll, when I passed the wagons evry thing was eating but never said turky.  
  Sept. 24th. We traveled on our road passed some fine country camped on the river for our last knight on it.  
  Sept. 25th. We traveled on headed the tuly passed sum fine country went on crosed Cash Creek went up the creak about a mile camped, turned out our cattle in an oald field, fine feed.  
  Sept. 26th. We traveled on our road passed the finest country in this world went up cash creak camped on it. Their was several of us went out to a farm about one mile acrofs the creek after sum water mellons. Their we got sum of the finest that I ever saw in my life.  
  Sept. 27. We traveled on our way across the country to futher over sum fine country. Came to the Creak there camped. Sum tried to get sum meat but could not get it myself and Riley went and suckseded in getting a little.  
  Sept. 27 we traveled on our road over some prety roling ground crossed a dry creak with standing water in it in holes. Went on came to a creak and a fine tavern then camped at the Wilson House in a fine valley. Wm. Travis came up today with two head of cattle that was lost on the summit.  
  Sept. 28th. We traveled on our road. Got a late start on the acount of our stock was mifsing several head gone. We went on into suisune valley, there camped on a dry creek with pools of water in it. Camped late.  
  Sept. 29th. We traveled on our road we went over a smawl mountain into Napa Valley. Camped on the bay near Napa City, met some of boys, boys met us here today, this knight will rest on my hapinefs but did not get the chance to do my intention.  
  Sept. 30th. We traveled on our road went to the bay the tide was rising but we all crossed went in town passed thrue. One of our wagons and family stoped within two miles of town. One of our men went a head to look for a place but did not find any to soot him. He met us today we camped in two miles of Sonoma Moars turned our cattle in a field, fine food.  
  Sept. 31 We traveled on our road.
