Notes:

Listed in the 1890 San Jose City Directory, including Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, and Monterey Counties for Blanco, Monterey County:
  Fanuef E P, laborer

From Lorraine F. O’Connor (February 5, 1961, copy from Bert Wonnacott):
Ernest (?) married an Hawaiian woman, and on her death married another. All three daughters, Dora, Alice and Mary (?) are still in the islands I believe. Alice is "Manu lani," [?](meaning "bird in the air"- or "heavenly bird") and came to Calif and lived with Grandma a couple of years, before her nurse's training at Salinas General Hospital. She took care of Grandma during her last illness.

The following material is from Mona Chapoulie, Alice Lonoaia's great granddaughter (20 May/ 2 June 2003):

Marriage: May 03, 1901, Performed By Rev. Parker

...Alapai's daughters with Ernest Faneuf, Doris, Maria and Alice were
hanai'd away from the Faneuf's by Mr. and Mrs. George Potter.

Hanai means raised. In Hawaii, it is very common for a family member to give their children to someone else to rear as their own. Nothing is formally done. Some reasons were, parents died or were unable to care for their child, or they had many children and a family member or friend couldn't and thus they would turn their child over.
