From Henry Hardin of California, by Fredna Tweedt Irvine (Belmont, MA: 1976), page 43:
Mary was born in Shenandoah County, Virginia, in 1780, and was the daughter of Benjamin and Judith (Hurst) Smith of Shenandoah Co., Va., and later of Jefferson Co., Kentucky. Mary (Smith) Hardin lived in Kentucky until 1839 when she, a widow, went with her second son and his family to Missouri. She is listed with the Henry Hardin family in the Missouri Census of 1850.
