From Susan Zeni (taken from NewspaperAbstracts.com 1Jun07):

December 20, 1890 The Sonoma Democrat
The old story of carelessness in the use of firearms was forcibly brought to public notice again Wednesday morning, by the tragic death of William FINLEY, son of John FINLEY, a prosperous dairyman and farmer living near Bodega. It appears that young FINLEY had been making preparations to indulge in a hunting trip and on Wednesday morning, made the final arrangements to carry his resolution into effect. He was in the act of leaving the family residence when, by an unfortunately careless movement on his part, his gun, a Winchester rifle of 44-calibre pattern, was discharged, the ball entering his mouth and passing through his head. He was quickly conveyed into the house and common restoratives applied, but life had passed away almost with the exit of the deadly leaden messenger from his skull. He was an industrious, hard-working young man, sober and steady, a native of this State and only 23 years of age. He was the youngest son of a large family of boys and had spent the major portion of his life upon the farm where he met his tragic death.

The Finley Family has been researched very extensively by the professional genealogist, Carmen Finley. In particular is her award winning Finley Family History Database at Sonoma State University, her book, The Finleys of Early Sonoma County, California (Heritage Books, Inc.: Bowie, Maryland, 1997), and her John Finley descendants website

From Susan Zeni (email 6 Aug 2005):

...Julia A. Braden, wife of Isaac McReynolds (my GGgrandfather), was the daughter of George Marbern Braden and Nancy J. Finley. George Braden died in 1853 in Macon Co Illinois, and in 1856 Nancy, a widow, came over the Oregon Trail with 5 of her children and settled near Bodega and her brother John Finley. John Finley had migrated to Sonoma County in 1852 from Missouri. This John Finley (who married Keziah Head) was Carmen Finley's great grandfather. Nancy J. Finley's brother, Samuel, was also in the same Sonoma County neighborhood.

Nancy J. Finley Braden's daughter, Julia Ann Braden, married Isaac McReynolds in Sonoma Co in 17 Nov 1864.

Her daughter, Elizabeth P. Braden, married John C. Parker 10 Dec 1864 in Sonoma Co. (they had 3 children).

Her daughter, Almyra J. Braden, married Thomas A. Barnett 10 Feb 1868 in Sonoma Co, (they also had 3 children).

Nancy J. Finley's son, Samuel R. Braden, "Lived in Duncans Mills, Sonoma Co, Ca, where he seved as constable from 1875 to 1879", according to Carmen Finley. I don't know if he married.

The other son who came with Nancy to Sonoma Co, James W. Braden, later went to Oregon.

... Spring Hill Cemetery which houses the McReynolds graves, also has the graves of John Finley and his wife Keziah Head, as well as most of their children. Later Finley generations, though, are buried elsewhere - maybe the Finley Gravesite in Bloomfield?

From Susan Zeni (email 1 June 2007):

At today's work party we uncovered another headstone. I have attached the images. We found the top of an existing standing bottom. It is already on the map and is number 19.

Email 1 June 2007:

Mary Ford was not previously recorded on any of our burial lists. The finding of her stone brings us up to 104 known burials at Spring Hill. As Mary was not listed on the 1934 DAR burial list, it seems likely that her stone had been broken with the top buried before the 1934 cemetery survey was taken.

From Carmen Finley (email 12 June 2007):

There was a Barney Cravens Ford, age 34, Bodega Township, in the 1890 Great Register of Sonoma County.

Was this the husband of Mary Ford whose stone was found during last work day at Spring Hill?

I checked the newspaper index for this period and she was not listed there...
