Notes:

(Copied from Laura Nell Brewer)

According to family legend, he had run away from his home in South Carolina and went to Mississippi when he was around 14 to 16 years old. His reasons are unknown, for he would never talk about his childhood or have any contact with his parent's family. Left Mississippi to take up residence in Arkansas in the later half of 1854.

Pages from the Warner Family Bible (copy from Floyd Warner).

Remarks from Dana Brewer Speck (daughter of Laura Nell Brewer, a Warner family researcher for the past 30 years, and a descendant from David's and Frances' son Samuel Eli), in August of 1999, concerning David Samuel's parentage:
There has always been a lot of speculation that he is the child of Jacob Warner and Mary Martha Metts but we have not been able to prove it. They had 13 children all born in Newberry Co. [SC]...
The reason we think that David Samuel may be the child of Jacob and Mary Martha Metts is:
1. We found David Samuel living in Lafayette Co., MS (where he married) living with a Charles Watson. In searching for Charles in hopes to find something more on David we tracked him back to Newberry Co., SC. Where he lived near a bunch of Warners and Metts (Mettz, Metz). In Lafayette Co. there was also a Joseph Warner living near them.
2. Jacob and Martha had 13 children all born in Newberry Co. Their 5th child was a David Draten born 3-17-1830. Our David Samuel we show was born 9-26-1829 in SC. This is the closest that we have gotten, but have yet to be able to actually make any kind of connection. Seems like the Warner line has a history of getting upset with family members and not keeping in touch.
3. My other search as been on an Elizabeth Warner I found living in Lexington Co, SC. We found her in 1850 in Lexington Co, with a Christian SMITH who was German and a blacksmith. She had several children with ages close to David Samuel. With the story always being told that he ran away from home because he didn't like his stepfather could ring true with this line...

Joined Company E, of the 47th Regiment of the Arkansas Cavalry at the outbreak of the Civil War (Service Record copied). Paroled at Jacksonport, Arkansas on June 5, 1865. Applied for a disability pension as a result of losing an eye during the war. Claim (Ex #939) was filed December 7, 1891 (copied from Arkansas History Commission microfilm) and not in the pension index because it was rejected. A pension was not awarded by the review board for the reason that the eye was lost from small pox and not in battle.
