Notes:

From Phyliss McMaster, "James Jerome THOMPSON," p. 1:
...most likely in Madison County. However the THOMPSON family at that time lived in an area which bordered the counties of Henderson and Carroll and Gibson as well. Not only that, but records indicate they lived in at least two of these four counties, and possibly in all four of them.
James Jerome or J. J. as he more often signed his name, married by 1851 or early 1852, most likely in Madison County, someone who became the mother of at least two of his children. In 1850 James was still living with his parents and was unmarried so, although no marriage records have survived, he seemingly married within this time period, for he had a son named John Milton THOMPSON, b. Oct. 1852, and a daughter, Mary Ann THOMPSON, b. May 1855.
John M. and Mary A. THOMPSON were listed as the grandchildren of John W. FISHER in his will, thus making them the children of James J. THOMPSON and this first wife, ____ FISHER. John W. FISHER wrote his will in October of 1864 and it was proved in Madison County, Nov. 6, 1865, (Will Book A, pg 27). He mentioned only his wife, Sarah, and his two grandchildren by name. Their mother's name was not mentioned. The children were to get all the property which John had left to his wife, Sarah, when either she died or remarried.
Apparently James' first wife, the daughter of John FISHER, died shortly after Mary Ann's birth, however, the 1850 census showed her still living at home with her own parents, as Elicabeth J. FISHER, age 17, and so we have been able to determine her name.

James Jerome THOMPSON was the son of Robert P. THOMPSON and his first wife, name unknown.

From a recollection from Gayle Martinsen (07 Jan & 13 Jan 2001):
I just don't know anything about Grandpap Thompson or where he came from. Grandpap is what my grandaddy called him... In the Deview area he was the only old Thomson, I figured he brought his family along with the Crossett neighbors from Tennessee. [His daughter] Martha inherited a farm from him... I did know that Grandpap Thompson's wife, my great great grandmother's maiden was McCauley, I found that in some of Mom's notes. There was a son named Albert... He is the one that had the big house at DeView and a store.

From the Woodruff County News (McCrory, AR, G. W. Kramer, editor), Thursday, May 9, 1907 (from Gayle Martinsen):
Mr. Jas. Stack, and wife, of Brinkley, attended the funeral of J. J.Thompson, here Tuesday.
Rev. A. C. Thompson, of Wynne, came over Saturday to attend the bedside of his cousin, J. J. Thompson.
Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Greer, of Augusta came over last week, on account of the sickness of Mrs. Greer's father, Mr. J. J. Thompson.

Deview:
DeView has lost one of her oldest and best citizens, that of Mr. J. J. Thompson, age 77 years, whose death occured Sunday, May 5 1907. He was a member of the Methodist Church, and an ex - Confederate soldier. The largest number of people attended the burial of this worthy old gentle man, than have been seen at a funeral service before in quite a while. Obituary will appear later.

The obituary mentioned could not be found in later editions of this paper. Mention of a cousin in Wynne, suggests that more genealogy needs to be done on this line.

J. J. Thompson is listed as purchasing plot 37 of the "Old Part" of the "cemetery at DeView". This from a handwritten document which includes plot maps on LDS Fiche #6018052 (found by Pat Bodine), "Arkansas Tombstones: DeView, Arkansas."

Burial listed in Cemetery Records of Woodruff County, Arkansas, Volume II (East of the Cache River), by Adelia C. Kittrell and Curtis A. Houston, p. 238:

  ODD FELLOWS CEMETERY: North Half
Thompson, J. J. , b. Oct. 18, 1829, d. May 6, 1907.
