According to the histories written about his father, James, Jesse came to California with his parents and siblings in 1856 by boat. The family first settled on land near the site of what became known as Blanco in Monterey County.
According to the family stories, he dug the grave to bury his wife's grandmother, Rebecca (Venable) Cockrill.

Death came early this morning to Jesse Bardin, well-known pioneer resident of this city, who passed away at his home at 340 Cayuga street, from infirmities that come with the advance of years. News of his death will bring sorrow to his many friends throughout the county.
Born in Tippah county, Mississippi, October 27, 1849, he was aged 79 years; nine months and 18 days at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, Janett, and the following children: Judge J. A. Bardin, Mrs. Wells Breese, and Mrs George Reidmiller, of Salinas; Mrs. Arthur Hobart and Mrs Helene J. Schaeffle of San Francisco. He is also survived by the following grandchildren: Cecil Breese, Marcel Lepierre, Mrs. Herbert Miles, and Roy Bardin of Salinas, Dan Bardin, Jane Bardin and Jesse Lapierre, of San Jose, Lois Schaeffle of San Francisco, and L. E. Breese of Oakland, and five great grand children. He was the brother of James Bardin, Charles Bardin, and Mrs. Robert Porter all of Salinas.
Bardin was among the best known and loved pioneers of this section, having arrived in California in 1856. His father, the late James Bardin, came to California in 1855, from Tippah county, Mississippi, and purchased a large tract of land lying along the Salinas river in the vicinity of the present city of Salinas in what is now known as Blanco district. In 1856 James Bardin returned to Mississippi for his family who then made their permanent home in the Salinas valley.
From the time of his arrival in 1856, deceased passed the major portion of his life in Salinas valley, where he successfully engaged in farming. In 1872 he was married to Miss. Janet Cockrill of Sonoma county. He retired from farming and stock raising about 1914 and moved to 340 Cayuga street, Salinas, where he resided until the time of his death.
The remains have been removed to the Struve & Laporte undertaking parlors from where funeral services will be held at 2:00 o'clock, Friday afternoon, with internment in I. O. O. F. cemetery.
