From a letter by Dr. John Baker:
  Preston Blair McGuire and Altemus McGuire were brothers who lived first in Iowa and then came out to California in 1852 to join their father James McGuire. My grandfather, John Irwin McGuire, was two years old then & is listed in the 1860 Census as 9 years.  
Listed as living on 6th Street in Santa Rosa, in the Sonoma County 1880 Census.
There is a J. N. McGuire, a. 27 b. MO, listed in the 1860 Census living in Bodega Twp (p. 534) next to a S. L. Trosper (a. 32 b. KY) family. John Irwin McGuire's aunt, Cornelia Elizabeth McGuire, had married Thomas Gilbert Woolsey Trosper.
