From his obituary in The Sacramento Bee, March 27, 1947, p. 23, c. 4:
  Funeral services were held today in Oakland for Walter C. Cockrill, 94, descendant of a pioneer California family and a former resident of Sacramento County. Cremation followed. Cockrill died Sunday in Oakland. Prior to his retirement 20 years ago. Cockrill was a farmer in the Orangevale and Wilton Districts of Sacramento County. Previously he had farmed in El Dorado County. His father arrived in California during the gold rush. He returned to Missouri and married. The couple came to California and settled in Santa Rosa in 1851 where Cockrill was born August 7, 1852. His wife was the former Alice M. Bounds who died in 1928. Cockrill leaves his daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Stephan of Sacramento and Bertha Cockrill and Mrs. Mildred Saurer, both of Oakland; his sisters, Mrs. Kate Heacock of Modesto and Mrs. Elizabeth Bell of Long Beach; and two grandchildren.
