Notes:

Probably the source of the Davenport name in the Cockrill family. It is believed (actual documentation for this has been lost or destroyed) that Lucy Davenport may be the granddaughter of Davis DAVENPORT (born about 1660 and lived in King William County, Virginia). Descendants of this line of Davenports are known as "The Pamunkey Davenports," since Davis Davenport's Plantation and Landing existed on the Mataponi River in Pamunkey Neck, King William County, Virginia back in 1696. Contemporary descendants of this line number in the thousands and there is a website concerning their extensive genealogy which can be found at The Pamunkey Davenport Genealogy Page.

From Ellen Venable Poteet, a Venable family descendant and researcher:
Aletha Hoag's DAR application also listed Joseph Venable's wife as Lucy Davenport, but to date there is only circumstantial evidence that she was a Davenport before marriage. However, since Davenport has been carried down in every generation of their son John's family as well as in other branches, I have accepted it until proven otherwise. The DAR application listed incorrect birth and death dates for Joseph and Lucy, which should be revised when more information comes to light.

Also from Ellen Venable Poteet (email from 30 Oct 2001):
The Davenport-Venable connection lacks a definite proof. It is circumstantial at this point, but someday someone will find the documentation. Interestingly, Henrietta Brady Brown's book, "Some Venables...," shows a marriage between a Davenport and a Venable in the 1100s and in the 1500s. So it's quite possible there was another alliance in the 1700s. If royalty is reckoned from a Norman chief, then maybe we qualify.

Lucy's brother, is believed to be Thomas Davenport, the grandfather of Mary Davenport. Mary Davenport had married a John David Hopper -- and their son, David Davenport Hopper was a member of the 1853 Hagans-Cockrill Wagon Train.
