Was 18 years older than Ellender when they married (did he have a previous family?). According to cemetery records was in the Civil War ("Co. E. 8th DE Inf."). There is a large monument at gravesite with the surname only.

Personal estate worth $500 according to the 1870 Census.

In the Federal Land Patent Deed Index for Sonoma County, Jeremiah Claypool is listed as recording Patent # 6065 for land in Township 10 North Range, Number 8 West, Section 31 on 10 Feb 1881.

Jeremiah Claypool, representing Ellender, filed an extensive and rancorous lawsuit against Henry Beaver, several family members, and other individuals over the disposal of the piece of Sonoma County property that they contended had belonged to James A. Cockrill at the time of his death. Particularly, they claimed that neither Ellender or Walter had ever received anything from the sale of their father's estate. The two suits in the 7th District Court in Sonoma County, #561 and #657, are tedious, repetitious, convoluted, and incredibly dull to attempt to read and figure out. Eventually the case was dropped, with nothing much resolved it appears, except that the Claypools blamed Henry Beaver for the whole situation and not Ellender's step-parents, Dr. James M. and Mary M. Case. Clearly it appears that there was a deep split between the Claypool branch of the Cockrill's and the Beaver branch. However, Jeanne Miller has told me that there was also an earlier lawsuit were Jeremiah filed a suit in Colusa County with Henry Beaver against James M. Case. There is also a lawsuit on January 23, 1865 (Sonoma County District Court Case #463) between Jeremiah Claypool and James M. Case (residing in Colusa County), in which Claypool wins a settlement of $365.15. Obviously there was no love lost between Claypool and Case.
