He was 6 years of age, when he came to Santa Rosa in 1853 by ox-driven wagon, with his parents as members of the Hagans-Cockrill immigration.

In the 1870 Census record for Alizal (Alisal) Township, Monterey Co., there is a listing at dwelling #308 for C. M. Cockrill, age 23, bp. MO, a farmer with $300 of Real Estate and $200 of personal estate. Enumerated with him are, Mary E. Cockrill, a. 20, bp. MO, keeping house; Annie Lewis, a. 3, bp. CA, at home; Ruhamy Grant, a. 48, bp. KY, "living with son"; Jennette Cockrill, a. 14, bp. CA; and Hattie Grant, a. 8, bp. CA.
His brother, is listed at dwelling #307 as R. B. Cockrill.

In the 1880 Census record for Soledad Township, Monterey Co. (Sup. 4. Enum. 57, p. 31), there is a listing at dwelling #8 for Chas. Cockrill, age 33, bp. Missouri (father bp. KY, mother bp. IL), a farmer. Enumerated with him are his wife, Mary E., a. 30, bp. Missouri (father bp. TN, mother bp. MO), keeping house and their children: Charles, a son, a. 8, bp. CA and Mary E., a daughter, a. 6, bp. CA. A Fannie Lewis, a. 13, bp. CA (both parents bp. MO) is enumerated as a "step-daughter".

From the Salinas Daily Journal, Saturday, January 9, 1892, p. 2:
  Charles M. Cockrill came up yesterday from his ranch on the Arryo Seco. He reports green food still very short owing to the cold weather.  
Charles' mother, Ruhamy Grant, passed away on January 4, 1892 (the Salinas Daily Journal for that date is missing from the microfilm rolls).

Believed to have died in a horse related accident like his brother. From an unlabeled newspaper clippings from Rebecca Cockrill (originally from the Bardin family):

  The Coroner's Jury So Finds in the Case
Of Charles M. Cockrill.
 
  Coroner Muller held an inquest Friday evening upon the body of Charles M. Cockrill who Thursday night was plunged to his death over a bluff near his home at the Arroyo Seco. The jury found that death was due to accident. The remains were brought to this city Friday night, Mrs. Cockrill, his wife, his son Fred and his daughter, Mrs. Thomas P. Joy, arriving by the Saturday morning's train.
The funeral will take place at 2 o'clock this afternoon from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Thomas P. Joy, on San Luis Street. Rev. E. B. Hatch will officiate and the interment will be made in the I. O. O. F. cemetery.
 


Chas. M. Cockrill filed two Federal Land in section 24, Township 19 South, Range 5 East: Patent #2174, patented June 30, 1883 and Patent, #12341, August 8, 1892. His brother, Robert, also filed for two patents in section 24 (the first also being filed on June 30, 1883).
