Notes:

The source for this individual is from The Coffman/Kauffman Family website which identifies Dorothy Strickler as the daughter of Joseph STRICKLER and Dorthea STICKY. However, the dates for marriages and children for these parents from other Strickler family sources do not match up for the birth date of this Dorothy Strickler.

Also, there is the following message from 2 May 2001 posted on the Genforum's Kauffman Family Genealogy Forum:

Kauffman Exhibit in VA- David in 18 cent

Posted by: Kelli Hertzler

I'm researching a house and its owners for an upcoming exhibit for the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society. The house, called Belle Grove, is attributed to David Kauffman and was built by 1840. It is located just north of Harrisonburg, VA in Rockingham County. The land was owned by David and Jacob Kauffman in 1789, relationship not known to me.

It is said that David's father was Michael Kauffman, but I have found postings on the web that make a good argument for Martin Kauffman (mother listed as either Barbara Holdiman or Barbara Stover.) Martin died on a sister estate just a few miles from the house I'm researching. To complicate matters, Jacob Stover (father of Barbara), was the first person to put settlers on his land grant in the valley. One of the first ten settlers was Michael Kauffman.

David's wife is sometimes listed as Dorothy Strickler, sometimes Anna Sarah Lionberger, but in His will he mentions wife Sally.

The next owner (after David) is Samuel (H. or L. middle initial) Coffman, who takes possession in the early 1800's. (Many of records were burned in Civil War, so exact dates are not possible). He was a representative in the VA House of Delegates 1829-1830.

A later owner of the Belle Grove was Eramus Coffman, Jr.

Any help will be most appreciated, although the exhibit opens in June 2001, so please don't hesitate! If I can determine the correct identity of David's wife and parents, I think I'll have it worked out.

Someone graciously donated the recent Kauffman/Coffman book to our Society, though I haven't put my hands on it yet!
Kelli

Followups:

Found it! Kelli Hertzler 5/03/01

Got my little hands on an old copy of the Kauffman/Coffman book and it answered all my questions! What a blessing for you researchers, wish my family had that kind of info available.

Turns out this line is as follows (starting with a recent generation):
Vice Admiral De Witt Coffman son of
Samuel A. Coffman son of
Samuel L. Coffman son of
David Coffman son of
Michael Coffman son of
Martin Coffman

If this is your line, you probably know the rest. If you are wondering if this might be your line, post a message and I'll provide more info. I likely don't know much about the genealogy that isn't the aforementioned book, but I have learned some things about the property and connections to other families in the area that may be of interest.

Anyway, the Coffmans of Rockingham County, VA will be spotlighted in our upcoming exhibit, "Remembered Treasure: Rockingham's Belle Grove." It runs mid June through early fall. The web site to the museum is at www.heritagecenter.com for more information. For you folks who might be interested, but aren't fortunate enough to live in the Shenandoah Valley, we'll likely post an online version of the exhibit when the physical one closes.
