Notes:

From an email (16 Oct 2006) by Steve Kauffman, a descendant of David Kauffman:

Martin Jr. and David divided the 540 acres Martin Sr. had owned, or I should say David bought 270 acres from his brother Martin Jr. Martin Jr. lived in his father's house, still standing and occupied, and David built his own house and the flour mill. Martin Jr. built the White House as a dwelling and church.

When David died, his son Abraham bought the mill and 50 acres from his mother and siblings. He married Mary Strickler, sister to... Barbara Strickler. In 1809 he sold the mill and 50 acres, and moved to Licking County, Ohio. I find where... James Rice married Barbara, but I am not sure where they are living at this time. I get the impression he may be connected to a Rice family in New Market, Va, but I am not sure. It would take a trip to the courthouse in Woodstock, Va to look for that information. If Barbara moved to Ohio about the time her sister did, she might have met and married there.

There was a mass exodus from Page County (then Shenandoah) at this time, for religious reasons. My ancestor Daniel was the only one of his siblings who stayed on the ancestral farm. The house he built has been torn down for many years. The house I live in was built in 1820 by Daniel Strickler. Daniel Strickler died in 1822, and my Daniel bought back the house Daniel S. had built on land Daniel K had sold him. We are holding on to about 18 acres of the original part of what was once 540 acres of Martin Kauffman's land. The mill has been taken down and only the foundation remains...

From Forerunners: A History or Genealogy of the Strickler Families Their Kith and Kin, by Harry M. Strickler (Harrisonburg, Virginia: 1925), p. 325:

David Coffman's home on the Hawksbill was owned by Harrison Long about 1890. David Coffman had the following children: Nancy m. John Strickler, Sarah m. Harrison Wood, Maria m. Kite, George whose widow lived in Massanutten had a son John, Hon. Martin R. Kauffman, and Eliza m. Harrison Ruffner.

However, on the preceeding page he also states that this David is the:

...David Kauffman of the Hawksbill, son of Martin, the Baptist minister.

In an earlier section (p. 231) he has this material for the Kauffman family:

The Kauffmans.

Mr. Philip M. Kauffman, who with his son, H. M. Kaufman, owns and operates the mill below the White House, in White House Bend (known as the Mauck mill) tells me that his great-grandfather, David Kauffman, married Elizabeth Strickler, daughter of Joseph Strickler of Egypt. His letter is dated April 20, 1914. He showed me David Kaufman's grave in the cemetery near his home, marked with a stone bearing the date, Jul. 15, 1804, indicating the date of his death. He had gathered considerable information which he kindly presented to me, which I here submit in condensed form.

Mr. Kauffman thinks that Nancy Kauffman who married John Strickler of Locust Grove, son of Isaac, was first cousin to his grandfather Daniel Kauffman, and, if his supposition is correct, she was a daughter of John Kauffman who lived at the White House farm. He further states that Daniel's father David lived at the Mill, where he lives now, and that another brother lived above the White House bridge now owned by A. J. Brubaker. He thinks that the other brother was named Martin and the Benj. F. Coffman, of East Rockingham is a descendant.

He goes on to list six children for Elizabeth Strickler and David Kauffman: Peter, Abraham, Rachel, Barbara, "Another daughter", and Daniel. This is not match the children he lists on page 325. Material in the last paragraph also does not match up to Strickler's genealogy for Nancy Kauffman. There is some kind of confusion going on here between two David Kauffmans, as well as Elizabeth and Dorothy Strickler. Steve Kauffman in an email from October 17, 2006, indicated that his linage follows this line: "Martin Sr died 1749; David, died 1804; Daniel died 1844; Barney died 1855; Philip, died 1934 ..." Elsewhere he had stated that besides Forerunners, he had also found that the information in Kauffman-Coffman Lineages, by Charles F Kauffman (published in 1940) very useful, but warns "As can be expected both have their share of mistakes".

Therefore, because of the different names for the children of this family that are listed in the sources used here, it is unknown at this time which one is correct (or even if that can be known).
