From Dorothy Hankins (9 Jan 2004 email):
Two days ago at the Library of Virginia I finally came upon the answer to Richard P. & Elizabeth Watson's divorce that I had been seeking for a number of years. The divorce was indeed granted! A letter in the Virginia Historical Society written by the wife of a Mississippi descendant of Richard P. Watson & 1st wife Eliza Cooke (looking into the Virginia Watsons in the 1930s) states that the divorce was never finalized. My thoughts on the divorce wavered between "it was and it wasn't" granted, although I leaned toward believing that it was. I thought that there should have been some finalization with Elizabeth McGehee Watson's petition papers I had seen in the Archives earlier...but there was nothing in them to indicate the outcome, so I was left wondering. R.P. was called a scoundrel by some of his neighbors in Prince Edward. To me, he was colorful enough to be the central figure in an early American novel, with a few characteristics like his grandmother Mary DeJarnette. But not so colorful as the bigamist some had thought. He married Mary Camp of Davidson County, TN, August 27, 1839.
Richard P. Watson was the eldest child of Mary "Polley" Price and Abner Watson of Cumberland and Prince Edward counties, VA; later of Rockingham County, NC. It is such a pleasure bringing together the loose ends of genealogical puzzles!
