Notes:

Also known as "Jim Wright." Is listed as being from Magazine and attending the funeral for his half-sister, Sarah Elizabeth Holland, in 1937. The old obituary notice kept by my great-grandmother, which contained this information was an important piece of the puzzle in finally determining "Grandma Holland's" genealogy.

In 1900 Census (ED. 107 sheet 11 page 48A), DeView Township, Woodruff Co, dwelling 185, James A. Wright, head of house, b. May 1867, a. 33, bp. NC (both parents' bp. NC), married 8 years, a farmer who can read and write, owns "free" (without mortgage) farm number 136. Enumerated with wife, Callia (a. 30), and daughters: Birdie M. (a. 4), Maggie B. (a. 3), and Willie L. (a. 1).

In 1920 Census (ED. 242 sheet 83), DeView Township, "South of Road", dwelling 83, James A. Wrighthead of house, a. 53, bp. NC (both parents' bp. NC), did not attend school but could read and write, farmer, enumerated with wife, Sallie T., a. 49, bp. AR (both parents' bp. TN), did not attend school but could read and write. Children (born in AR, older ones have attended school): Maggie M. (a. 23); Willie L. Thomas (21), her husband, Claud C. Thomas, a. 25, bp. AR (both parents bp. AR), their children, Alvin Thomas (2, bp. AR) and Maggie L. (1); Isilla J., (19); Carrie L. (17); Maynard A. (15); Afton E. (14); John A. (11); Elisa A. (9); Velon C. (7); Mammie C. (5)
It is curious that they are listed living in Woodruff County at this time since they had already moved to Logan County.

Moved to the Magazine area in Logan County, along with Robert Lee Wright's family (to escape yellow fever in Woodruff County which was killing their children, according to Lorece Wright) around the turn of the century. Link to some Logan County Records for James A. Wright.

There were other Wright families living in Logan County many years before James moved his family there. One in particular, was the family of James L. Wright, born 17 Jan 1795 (his son, Newton F. Wright, lists his father being born in Ireland in the 1880 Census). There was some wishful thinking that this could be E. A. Wright's lost brother but several pieces of information about him and his family does not match up. This Wright was a Methodist circuit rider who preached the Bible in South Carolina and met his wife in that state. Several of their children who followed them to Arkansas were born in either South Carolina or Alabama. A family group related to this James supposedly settled on a 160 acre parcel of land called Sand Ridge before the Civil War. There are six Arkansas land patents (in T7N R24W) registered to James L. Wright beginning in 1857 which total to 360 acres. There is also a Wright Cemetery on Sand Ridge, and James L. Wright was buried there 9 Nov 1876. Other Wright family members buried there are Amge (1879-1956), Earl (1889-1911), Jimmie (1892-1892), L. C. A. (1841-1882), Mary (1870-1925), Newton (1827-1888), Nuton (1865-1950), Rooney (1874-1927).
This James L. Wright may also have had some connection to Colonel James Logan, an early Arkansas pioneer who had moved from Missouri to Sugar Creek, south of Petit Jean River after the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811 and 1812. The particular area he settled in became part of the Arkansas Territory in 1819 (which was created from the Louisiana Purchase of 1803), Crawford County in 1834, Scott County in 1836 and then Logan County in 1871.

A J. A. Wright is listed as owning plot 18 on June 15, 1894 of the "old part" of the "cemetery at DeView". This from a handwritten document which includes plot maps on LDS Fiche #6018052 (found by Pat Bodine), "Arkansas Tombstones: DeView, Arkansas." His children, Lydda A., Alma M., and Birdie May are listed being buried in the South Half (this appears to be a newer section though?) of the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Cemetery Records of Woodruff County, Arkansas, Volume II (East of the Cache River), by Adelia C. Kittrell and Curtis A. Houston, p. 244-245.
