Notes:

From ANDERSON, COCKRILL, MOFFETT, SMITH & Allied Families of Northern Virginia -- VOLUME 1: Cockrill Families of Northern Virginia, by James A. Burgess (James A. Burgess, Arizona: 2002), pp 1-2:

Walter ANDERSON has always been a very fascinating individual in that I believe many of us are his descendants in more than one line. I am his descendant through three different family lines. After a brief study of Walter we see that he has posterity in Northern Virginia and now across America.

His three daughters, Hannah, Ann, and Mary married William COCKRIL, Joseph SMITH and Henry MOFFETT whose families seem to sprout up everywhere in Northern Virginia.

Cyprian PROU was his only son.

We do know for sure that Walter ANDERSON ran an ordinary, which was a place to eat, drink and sleep. Walter was a man of some political authority in King George County, Virginia and was also the Sheriff in King George County from time to time.

We know that his descendants are for the most part from King George County, Virginia, Prince William County, Virginia, Stafford County, Virginia and Fauquier County, Virginia. This work is just a small step in beginning to identify his posterity and our ancestry.

Walter ANDERSON left us a lot of records to study. Let's review his vital statistics, wives, his children, patents & property, possible clues to his parentage, friends, occupation and myth's about the man.

VITAL STATISTICS OF WALTER ANDERSON

Walter ANDERSON was born in the 1670-1680 period.

He may have been born in the Old Swedes Church, Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware, Westmoreland County, Virginia, New York City; I will try to explain the reasons for each as we move forward with this complicated family history.

I believe that Walter ANDERSON may have come with his father to America.

Walter Anderson's will is found in King George County, Virginia Will Book 1 pages 93-94. His Inventory and Appraisement survive in Richmond County, Virginia. Walter Anderson's will is dated 7 November 1732 and was recorded in King George County, Virginia, 2 May 1732/1733.

NOTE: Early records of Old Rappahanock County, Virginia present us with a Walter ANDERSON who would have been born about 1660-1670. We do not know if this is our Walter or if there is an older Walter Anderson?

INTERESTING UNPROVEN PUBLISHED SOURCES

Walter ANDERSON was christened 6 Oct 1689 in the Old Swedes Church, Wilmington, New Castle, Delaware the son of John ANDERSON and Sarah CHAMPE. This record is found in the Ancestral File of The Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints. Records in the Old Swedes Church apparently do not start until a few years later. The record shows John ANDERSON being born in 1653 in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware and Sarah CHAMP being born in 1657 in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware.

NOTE: I have been unable to find an original record to confirm the above information, but if true we would have another Generation. I tend to believe that this is a true record because of the strong Champ family influence in the area...

Records of the Reformed Dutch Church New Amsterdam and NY Baptisms 1639-1730 (Bergen Historic Books.com P O Box 244 Englewood, New Jersey 07631) have been researched by two different cousins and we have not found a connection to those records. Sad indeed!

[Walter ANDERSON is believed to be the son of John ANDERSON and Sarah CHAMP. We offer this information as a starting point to identify the relationship between the ANDERSON and CHAMP families.]

Herbert J. Boothroyd, another long time Cockrill family researcher, was also supplied me with information about the early history of the family. The following has been extracted from a letter to Jim Burgess, 21 October 1999, commenting about his work:

Have pursued your thoughts that John Anderson and Sarah Champ were "our" Walter's parents. Am going to refer to "our Walter" as the one who married S Prou and M Travis.

Believe it highly probable that there were two Walters and the son Walter in John Anderson 1720 King Geo Co is ours. Reasoning below.

...be a favor to readers to warn against using IGI without confirming from primary sources, e.g. the New Swedes Church records could not be. We know no such church in existence at time of supposed christening, no records extant from earlier churches, and Walter not a Swedish name. (I have been unable to identify a French church, or that 1702 marriage record either)...

My reasoning supporting your John A. and Sarah Champ idea: McJohn cited a Walter A on jury duty 1688, incidentally believe minimum jury age ten was 18, so this W born before 1670. So I believe that it was our W who got the 1728 land, etc. and the 1688 jurist probably his uncle (brother of John A). For them to be one and the same, the jurist would have been at least 58 when he got the land and married to Prou around age 45 or more. Children Cyprian and Mary under 23 in 1732 will, so born after 1710. Possibly Prou and Travis were 2d and 3d wives, but no mention in 1732 will of any older children.

If our W nephew of jurist W, he was father of first children born around 1710, so born around 1685, so jurist W and his brother John A could have been born around 1660. Note this would fit with a John Champe born around 1660-64. We could try to track the land John willed son Walter to see if it was owned by our Walter.

PATENTS & PROPERTY

Records appear on Walter ANDERSON in the following places; Old Swedes Church, Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware (not found by Jim Burgess); French Church, New York City, New York (not found by Jim Burgess), Old Rappahannock County, Virginia, King George County, Virginia, Stafford County, Virginia and Richmond County, Virginia.

Fauquier During the Proprietorship - A Chronicle of the Colonization and Organization of a Northern Neck County, by H. C. Groome (Clearfield Company), page 102:

This nucleus of a settlement on the future Winchester road was, at the time, the extreme verge of Virginia civilization and toward it the Rev. Alexander Scott now made his way by another route. Entering the county by the thoroughfare of Broad Run in the Bull Run mountains, he took, August 10, 1726, 781 acres on the branch of Broad run above the "Thoroughfair" (A:213) and July 10, 1727 2,823 acres "on a branch of Rappahannock river called Carter's Run in King George County and on the head of a branch of the Broad run of Occoquan River in Stafford County" (B:85). The latter grant was on the western side of Pignut and included the site of the present town of Marshall. The tract was subsequently found to contain 3, 533 acres, and on it the Scott estate of "Gordonsdale" was afterwards created.

Walter Anderson in the following year took two grants in this locality, one, June 15th, of 395 acres "on the northwest side of Watry Mountain on Great Run adjoining John Hudnall's land (B:127), and the other June 19, 1818 acres on Carter's run on the west side of the Rappanhannock mountain adjoining the land of Parson Scott (B:128).

[This information is important historically as our ancestor owned two tracts of land in this area when it was King George, before it was Prince William (formed 1731) and certainly before it was Fauquier County, Virginia (1759)...]

Why is that so important? I do not believe that Walter Anderson lived on this land but I do believe that William Cockrill and Hannah ANDERSON did live on this land. This beautiful valley in Fauquier County, Virginia where the Heflin Moffet Cemetery is today. Jesse MOFFETT the half brother of Anderson Cockrill is buired in this cemetery as is Thomas COCKRILL who is the grandson of Anderson COCKRILL When did William and Hannah ANDERSON move there? We will never know except that we do have the deed dated 8 Apr 1755. I believe that lived there several years before this. Further I believe that William COCKRILL and Hannah ANDERSON may have been the first to have been buried on that sacred plot of land.

Cavaliers and Pioneers, by Nell Marion Nugent, Volume 1 1623-1666 & Volume 2 1623-1666, Walter ANDERSON is not listed in these volumes. I do believe that his father or grandfather is our Immigrant Ancestor...

We believe that Walter ANDERSON lived his life in the northern Neck of Virginia, spending most of that time in King George County, Virginia.

PARENTAGE OF WALTER ANDERSON

John ANDERSON left his will in King George County, Virginia dated 2 Nov 1721. We believe that these two men were brothers. John ANDERSON is the first will found in the King George County, Virginia Will Book 1A.

Information on the IGI indicates that John ANDERSON and Sarah CHAMP are the parents of Walter ANDERSON. There is a very good possibility that this is true. .. We have no documentation to prove this as being true.

OCCUPATION

Walter ANDERSON also ran an ordinary which we believe to be a bed and breakfast.

As SHERIFF he was in charge of the jail and prisoners who would come and go.

MYTH'S ABOUT THE MAN

According to Lucy Montgomery Smith Price in The Sydney-Smith and Clagett-Price Genealogy, page 84, she states that Walter ANDERSON was an officer in the British Navy or Army based that on the fact that there was a sword in his inventory. I have found no indication that Walter Anderson served in the English military.

We have the inventory of Walter ANDERSON for your review. Some have indicated that Walter ANDERSON was an officer in the British military. To date we have found no documentation to prove or disprove this theory. Having a pair of pistols, holsters, sword & saddle does not mean that he was in the military. I find that owning a fiiddle may be much more important to learning about Walter ANDERSON. Was he a classical composer or did he just enjoy music? Perhaps he just enjoyed music and old swords.

Please notice in our records that the first Walter Anderson appears in 1789. Walter may have been born much earlier than we had originally believed or there are two Walter Anderson men. We would love to have documentation indicating a connection with Walter ANDERSON and David ANDERSON...

Old Rappahannock County, Virginia, Court Order Book 1683-1685, 6 Nov 1684, page 50: Reference is granted between John Willis and Walter Anderson until the next Court North side the River. Is this our Walter and have we miscalculated his birth date.

OTHER RELATIVES OF WALTER ANDERSON WHO LIVED IN THE AREA

John ANDERSON (wife unknown) born about (1665-1721) [We believe John ANDERSON... is the brother of Walter ANDERSON -- left a will, signed 2 Nov 1721, Hanover Parish, King George Co., VA]

1. Walter ANDERSON of Cople Parish, Westmoreland County, Virginia. Walter married Ann THORNTON daughter of Thomas THORNTON (1688-1729) and his wife Susannah SMITH to whom Henry BURDITT (16??-1725) bequeathed land. Ann THORNTON died before 1762. She was survived by Walter ANDERSON.

1b. Sarah ANDERSON was born before 1721.

1c. Unknown Sister ANDERSON... [a. William BROWN was born before 1725. b. Walter BROWN was born before 1725.]...

This material about the Anderson Family line starting with Hannah Anderson's father Walter, was obtained from Jim Burgess's old website:

He married twice. He married Mary Travis in Richmond, Virginia, April 5, 1713. Mary was born in Virginia about 1688. He then married Susanna Prou in Richmond, Virginia, April 5, 1715. Susanna was born in Richmond, Virginia before 1692.
THE SYDNEY-SMITH AND CLAGETT-PRICE GENEALOGY, by Lucy Montgomery Smith (1927 Shenandoah Publishing House Strasburg, Virginia), page 85: Sir Walter Anderson, Knight, Father of Kitty Anderson, Colonel Walter Anderson, Emigrant, came from Wales to Virginia with Captain Joseph Smith, who was of the Sydney-Smyth branch of the Sir Thomas Smythe family of Ostenhanger Castle. He was settled in Richmond before 1710, according to County Records.
Sir Walter Anderson was an officer in the British Navy, though some historians say British Army, but certain are his descendants of the following facts: He was an officer because in his inventory dated November 15, 1732, were a sword and other things which only an officer would possess. Henry Moffett married Anderson's daughter, Mary, then married second her sister, Elizabeth. Moving from the lower North Neck of old Virginia, we find his settling in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, in the fertile valley of Carter's Run, which once was old Rappahannock County, then Richmond and now Fauquier.
Between 1704 and 1715, Susannah Prow married "Walter Anderson, Planter" and on April 5, 1715, land was divided "between Walter Anderson and Susanna, his wife and Robert Benson and Frances Prow, his wife."
Deeds recorded in Richmond County, from the Land Office of Virginia Records:
"Walter Anderson-395 acres in King George County, on the North side the Watry mountains in the great great run-dated Jun 15, 1728." North Neck Land Grants Book B, page 127.
"Walter Anderson - 818 acres, in King George County, on Carter's Run on the west side of the Rappahannock, dated Jun 19, 1782." North Neck Land Grants Book B, page 128.
Walter Anderson's inventory is recorded in King George County, June 1, 1733. The "818 acres of land " seem to have been deeded to "Cyprion Anderson, Mary and Elizabeth Anderson, children of Walter and Susanna Anderson." Deeds to this land, dated 1739, and on record indicate that it had come to these children by the will of Walter Anderson, dated November 1732.

Judge W W Moffett says, "I have searched for this will, but I cannot find it (see deed in Fauquier). I have always heard that Walter Anderson was a Colonel in the English Army. His inventory indicates that. My great-grand father, Henry Moffett, prior to 1735, married Mary Anderson, who died leaving a large family. Henry married her sister, Elizabeth, some of the later descendants still reside on a part of the 818 acres of land. Anderson is a favorite name in my family. Anderson Moffett, the preacher, confined in Culpeper jail for preaching before the separation of Church and State, was a descendant of Sir Walter."
Dr Brock, Secretary of the Virginia Historical Society, under the hear of Eminent Virginians tells us that Captain Joseph Smith married Kitty, a daughter of Sir Walter Anderson of Wales, an officer in the British Navy and she was the grandmother of Thomas and William Smith of Richmond County. Memoirs of Governor William Smith of Virginia, by John W Bell and the family Bible assure us that Elizabeth Doniphan, born April 12, 1744, married in 1773 Willaim Smith, son of Joseph and Kitty Anderson Smith.
The descent of William as preserved by his descendants was as follows: "Sir Walter Anderson of Wales, an officer in the Brittish Navy, and Sir Thomas Sydney Smith a native of England, settled in Richmond, County, Virginia; and Joseph Smith, a son of the last named married Kitty, daughter of Sir Walter Anderson, the emigrant settler."
Walter Anderson received from Lord Fairfax a grant of 818 acres of land on Carter's Run, west side of Rappahanock mountain, and another of 395 acres in June, 1728. Fairfax Harrison, a brilliant historian, states in his valuable book, Land Marks of Old Prince William, also in No. 3 of the Fauquier Historical Bulletin, page 236, that Parson Scott and Walter Anderson were the first to dominate the stream of Carter's Run. This was named for Captain Thomas Carter, who was no relation to Robert Carter. (See Robert Carter's Will, Virginia Magazine, Volume 1, page 4). Carter's Run lied in the vicinity of the modern village of Marshall, the locality which was called the Upper Great Run of the North Branch of the Rappahannock.
Kitty, who married Captain Thomas Joseph Smith of the Revolution, the descendant of the Sir Sydney-Smiths of England, lived in the locality above mentioned, but close to the present town of The Plains. She has many descendants there, among them in the "Cedar Hill" Smiths, Judge Howard Smith, Mrs Samuel Price, Judge Anderson Smith, (the two last named now living in Fayette County, West Virginia) and Mrs William Lewis of "Mt Eccentric," where Kitty and Joseph between them inherited a large estate which was famous for elegant hospitality in what was then Richmond County, but now Fauquier. Colonel Robert McIntyre of Warrenton made an abstract of the property, "Mt Eccentric," and found it was a part of the land that came in to the familiy from the Doniphans.
History of Virginia, Volume V, (published by the American Historical Society), page 409: "The Virginia ancestors of Judge Moffett included Colonel Walter Anderson, of the English Army. The ancestor of the direct line in Virginia was Henry Moffett, born 1705, who came to the lower Northern Neck as a young man. His first wife was Mary Anderson. After her death he married Elizabeth Anderson, her sister. They were daughters of Colonel Walter Anderson, the immigrant.
After his marriage, Henry Moffett moved westward toward the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountain, and settled in the valley of Carter's Run in what is now called Fauquier County. His son, Rev. Anderson Moffett, was a Baptist minister, who took an active part in the establishment of religious liberty in Virginia and was imprisoned in Culpeper along with other Baptist ministers. He married Kitty Anderson, daughter of Sir Walter Anderson of Wales. Colonel in the British Army. He was Captain in the American Revolution and his family in England disowned him. This does not make sense. Who was in the British Army? Walter Anderson died before Mar 1733 in King George County, Virginia....
King George County, Virginia formed 1720-1721 from Richmond and Westmoreland. Richmond County, Virginia formed in 1692. Probate, deeds, and wills were kept from 1693. Westmoreland County, Virginia formed in 1653 from Northumberland. Northumberland and originial shire formed in 1648.
